The Risa Water Project is an initiative led by Africa Thriving to bring a permanent, self-sustainable, clean water source to the community of Risa, Kenya. The community of 800 Maasai people are purely dependent on livestock farming for economic survival. Their only available clean water is supplied by water tanks delivered by the Kenya Wildlife Service and Africa Thriving. This makes clean water very limited for the entire community. There is also a shallow well that is about 6 kilometers from the school. Since this well is shallow, it only provides water seasonally and runs dry during the times of the year when water is needed most.
Under the current circumstances, children and women are sent out to collect water by walking long distances across a wilderness full of dangerous wild animals. This time-consuming task prevents them from attending school and tending to their own businesses. Our vision is to provide a permanent water source that will keep children in school and create small business opportunities for the parents. The project will include a 200-meter-deep well, a solar-powered pump with elevated solar panels, a 10,000-litre tower tank, a water kiosk for public distribution, and a livestock drinking trough. The water project will be managed by a community leadership board that has been managing the school operations for many years. Funds collected from the water kiosk and livestock trough will be put into the Risa Water Fund and will be managed by the community leadership board to cover maintenance and expansion costs in the future, making this project completely self-sustainable.
